AAC lossless

A lossless audio coding format that is related to the standard lossy, Advance Audio Coding (AAC) format that is used by Apple's iTunes and iPod.

ASIO driver

Audio streaming input/output (ASIO) audio driver that provides low latency during audio recording and playback

decibel

The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit of measurement that expresses the measurement of sound pressure level (i.e. volume).

digitizing

The process that converts an analog audio signal to a digital representation that can be stored and played by the PC.

FLAC

Lossless audio compression format.  The name FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec.

RIAA

Recording Industry of America Association

sample rate

The rate at which the analog audio signal is digitized, which is 44,100 times per second.

signal clipping

Occurs when the amplitude of the analog audio signal during recording exceeds the input range of the digitizing hardware.

signal-to-noise ratio

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compares the level of the music to the level of background noise.  The SNR is represented in a logarithmic decibel scale

VU meter

Audio volume unit (i.e. VU) meter that is used to monitor recording volume of each channel.

WAV

Standard Windows uncompressed audio file format.

WMA lossless

A lossless version of the proprietary Windows Media Audio (WMA) digital audio file format developed by Microsoft.
